Caroline and the boys

It doesn’t feel that long ago that I bought my first DSLR. It also doesn’t feel like there was a good 2 years of futile tinkering and a only a handful of photos to see the light of day after that. It wasn’t until 2011 when I jumped onboad my mates’ RV holiday in the United States that things started to flow. In late 2010, Darcy and Vaughan made their way to the East Coast with plans to buy an RV (which Darcy named Caroline for reasons he always denied) and basically head west. Having started full time employment, I couldn’t join them for the 6 month itinerary, but picked them up half way in Las Vegas, for a 9 week adventure in the south west. We took in Death Valley, Yosemite, Zion, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands and the Grand Canyon.

Darcy’s interest in landscape photography has piqued at a similar time to mine. He’s one of the ants in this photograph of Rainbow Beach and pointed out this vantage point. Our friends know we’re both pretty competitive in anything we do, and while there were some instances of stomping in to one and other’s shots and exchanging swift words around it, we pushed eachother to learn a whole lot.

There’s no doubt that getting to areas of extraordinary natural beaty is what makes me want to take photographs and over the next few posts I’ll throw up some of my favourites from the RV adventure…
